Vocabulary
Besides reading books and singing songs, children learn words when adults name things around them in the world: foods, animals, household items, etc. Picture books contain lots of great vocabulary words that children don't hear in day-to-day conversations. Parents and caregivers can also encourage vocabulary development by using "big words" when talking to children. Children who hear lots of words will have an easier time reading those words in print.
